Music Curriculum

K-5 general music incorporates many different aspects of music such as:
*singing
*playing instruments
*improvising and composing
*reading and notating music
*listening, analyzing, and describing music
*learning how music relates to other subjects such as art, math, history, science, and language arts
*musical problem solving

Additional Focuses... (The activities below are definitely not all we do in music for each grade, but are special focuses that occur).
Grade K: Learns about echoes and the 4 voices we have (singing, speaking, shouting, and whispering).
Grade 1: Learns about the musical opposites such as fast/slow, loud/soft, high/low, up/down, long/short, and same/different.
Grade 2: Plays the boomwhackers and learns about the instruments of the orchestra.
Grade 3: Plays the Orff barred instruments.
Grade 4: Focuses mostly on the ukulele. They learn chords in the fall and individual notes in the spring. They also did recorders this year.
Grade 5: Has a "Composer Spotlight" where each month students learn and do activities related to a specific composer.

Arts Enrichment for grades K-4 is an extra weekly art/music time where students get to explore the arts even more! Students started with "The Lion King" themed lessons, followed by the world of "Frozen," then we were lucky to have an artist in residence come in March who worked with students to create "Peter and the Wolf" themed puppets. To end the school year students are learning about Brazil with "Rio" themed lessons!

Chorus is available to students in grades 4/5 during Tuesday/Thursday recess.

Band is available to 5th graders. Instruments available to rent and play in 5th grade are:
-Flute
-Clarinet
-Alto Saxophone
-Trumpet
-Trombone
-Baritone Horn
-Percussion (various instruments)

Band students rent their instruments and purchase supplies through Ellis Music

Preschool has music for 20 minutes a week. This includes a lot of sound exploration, singing, moving, and playing classroom instruments such as egg shakers and small drums.
