Orff with 5th grade

5th graders learned a "Winter Snowflakes" piece on the Orff barred instruments this January (Lesson found here, thanks O For Tuna Orff!). The form of the piece was ABA, with A being the "Winter Snowflakes" song and part B being one student improvising. Students rotated for each "part A" around the rug so they got to play the barred instruments, finger cymbals, and improvising glockenspiel.

  1. What a fun arrangement! It requires a lot of musical independence with the melodic line being on it's own, and with ostinatos in the barred instruments. I loved the finger cymbals part, too! Rotating parts means students learn all parts and have to adjust with each change. Great way to differentiate in the music classroom, thanks to the Orff approach!

    1. Thanks Martie. I just started using this rotating model and I really like it (I did one with Artie Almeida's "Mallet Madness" as well but that's a little different)! Students do learn every part and only have to wait a short time in between instruments when I'm teaching each instrument on it's own. And I only have to set up about 5-6 barred instruments instead of 15-20 for a whole class, which is a great time-saver and nice for classrooms that don't have a lot of barred instruments!
